Doors

There are many things here in Japan that are different from what we are used to in North America. Some of them are strange, and some of them are downright ugly, and some of them are extremely pleasing. Among the latter I count the attention to making nice-looking gates and doors. Yeah - gates and doors. And I am not talking about grand entrances to temples, shrines, or public buildings. I am talking gates and doors for ordinary houses that normal folks live in.

In contrast to the dull-looking doors to most North American houses, many Japanese homes have doors or gates that are very pleasing to the eye, and some that border on being works of art. Now, certainly not all Japanese houses have nice-looking entrances... there are some downright average-looking ones here too! But many an owner, contractor, architect, or developer seems to have taken an interest in making a good-looking (or at least interesting-looking) door or gate. Here's a selection, mostly from the area of town between Shugakuin (where I live) and Kyodai (where I work).

Doors...

And gates...

What can I say... it pleases me to see people care about these things.
